And the raiding is still good for raiders.

WoW is still the MMO that gives you far and away the most diverse amount of races and body types to pick from. The game looks aesthetically fantastic even on low end PCs, which is pretty important as the prices of GPUs have skyrocketed and there is a good chance they will never go back down all of the way (plus people are having less and less disposable income so they can't just lay down $3,500 to buy a video card to play FFXIV or GW2 or ESO or New World in HD and with good framerate). It has the most responsive gameplay of any MMO. Ofcourse, corporations aren't fine with making money they want all of the money, so they'd probably rather make mobile games or something.Īnother thing too, is that as bad as WoW is right now compared to its heyday, it's still up there as one of the best MMOs on the market. Those things alone can probably give WoW a large enough subscriber base to continue subsidizing development.

They would have to dip down below half a million subs before they start considering it, and even then Blizzard is probably too prideful to let the king sink as low as going F2P.Īnother thing too, is that as bad as WoW is right now compared to its heyday, it's still up there as one of the best MMOs on the market. Now, WoW has been moving towards the milking of whales direction, with the game being designed around the WoW token and more cash shop stuff being added, but WoW is still making bank off of milking $15 a month. Currently the only sub-turned-F2P based MMOs that are still running are very low maintenance and make their money off of a handful of whales. Historically, if a sub based game goes F2P it has severe issues that make it not fun and it will probably die anyway. Now that the public has a greater appetite for the MMO genre and its myriad of possibilities, maybe these games deserve another chance.I doubt WoW will go F2P anytime soon. All of the following games are no longer officially playable, although some private servers may exist. That might explain the sudden and enthusiastic drive to salvage and revive classic games, and there are a few from back in the day that had something unique or creative about them that deserves a revival.

MMOs are like any genre, and nostalgia has made some older versions of games even more popular than their modern counterparts. There's an incandescent light at the end of this neon tunnel, however. RELATED: Games For MMO Fans That Aren't MMOs Technology moves fast, and the market even faster, so a lot of these games have either passed into the recycling bin of history or are collecting virtual dust in a forgotten external drive. MMORPGs have matured into their own industry, and now that we've been playing online games together for more than a generation, we can look back at some of the earliest MMORPGs that first broke that new digital ground and made online gaming more than a niche interest. Everyone has a story about the first MMO they played, even if it was just a LAN party at a friend's house.
